Discovering My Neighborhood

“Why are there old apple trees in my neighborhood? How were apples high up in the tree picked? How do we know this?” Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them. By introducing children to the history of their neighborhood through artifacts, maps, and photographs, we can encourage their natural curiosity about what “used to be” long before “history” becomes dates and facts in a book. By encouraging curiosity and exploration, young students can begin to discover how their personal story fits into the story of their neighborhood, their town, & the world.
Through the Discovering My Neighborhood program, students will be able to identify features in their neighborhood and town, and know stories about them. By teaching students how to look at and interpret historical objects, photographs, and maps, students will develop appropriate grade-level critical thinking, analysis, and research skills. By working together in their inquiry and discovery, students will develop collaboration and communication skills. Our goal is that students will begin to develop an appreciation for the importance of history in their own lives, in personal and community decision-making, and a functioning democracy.

With Discovering My Neighborhood, students will begin to build a foundation of information and curiosity about their school neighborhood, their town and how the world around them came to be. The Andover Center for History and Culture will provide hands-on, sensory experiences with authentic objects in a way not often possible in the traditional classroom setting.
