A Brief History of Andover

1843-1927 Smith & Dove Manufacturing
John Smith, brother Peter Smith, and friend John Dove formed Smith & Dove in 1835, opening their first flax processing mill in Andover’s Frye Village. By 1843 the company expanded and moved operations to Abbot Village. Smith & Dove produced linen thread and twine for carpet weaving, shoes, and sail cloth. During the Civil War, Smith & Dove supplied linen thread for boots to the Union Army.

Smith & Dove recruited employees and skilled labor from their home town of Brechin, Scotland. They provided low cost housing and playing fields for cricket, soccer, and baseball. Most of the homes around Dundee Park were once housing for the hundreds of people employed by Smith & Dove.

The Smiths and the Doves gave back to the community in many ways. They supported Memorial Hall Library, Christ Church, Free Christian Church, and Abbot Female Academy.
