Bessie Goldsmith

Bessie Goldsmith was born in 1882 and grew up at 60 Elm Street. As an adult she had a home on Foster’s Pond. She was a lot of things over the course of her lifetime. For example, she was a devout conservationist. The AVIS Goldsmith Reservation was named after her. She was a reporter and editor for The Andover Townsman. Her journals and columns in the local newspaper have preserved Andover’s rich history.

On top of these already impressive feats she taught cooking classes, manufactured gas masks during World War I, had a small dressmaking business, painted, taught classes, and served 25 years as Andover’s second policewoman. She was very active in both the November Club and the Andover Historical Society.
