“Why are there old apple trees in my neighborhood? How were apples high up in the tree picked? How do we know this?”

Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them. By introducing children to the history of their neighborhood through artifacts, maps, and photographs, we can encourage their natural curiosity about what “used to be” long before “history” becomes dates and facts in a book. By encouraging curiosity and exploration, young students can begin to discover how their personal story fits into the story of their neighborhood, their town, & the world.

Discovering My Neighborhood
1st Grade

Students learn about Andover through the eyes of people who lived and worked in Andover in the early 19th century. Students don aprons and get to work gathering eggs in the barn, trading them in the general store, printing in the print shop, fighting a fire in a fire brigade, and grinding spices in the kitchen. Costumed guides lead students through a variety activities through the Amos Blanchard House and Barn.
