The Building Process: False Starts

The blueprint and photograph show the Balmoral Street area just prior to the construction of the Administration Building, finished in 1923. The outline of the Administration Building is shown over the houses which would need to be moved prior to its construction. For many of these houses it was not their first move around the village.
The Green or Cunningham House had already been moved from Poor Street to Haverhill Street, its next move was to Balmoral Street. The Brown House, formerly on North Main Street, was moved in the fall of 1921 to Balmoral Street. Its time there however was limited as it burned in March of 1922.
The Hill House was only moved once, Haverhill Street being its original location. It was moved to 47-49 Balmoral Street.
The Mura House had started life on North Main Street, this would be moved to 19 Argyle Street. Also starting life on North Main Street, the Edgar and McNally Houses would both be moved further up Balmoral Street.
In 1921 an entire street of houses was moved.  Wood had returned from a business trip to Europe to find that Argyle Street had been built in the wrong place, in the area set aside for the new mill building.  The street and all its houses was relocated to the other side of Haverhill Street.
