The Building Process: Reuse
As early as 1906 William M Wood had begun buying up land and buildings in Frye Village. Several of the buildings would be moved around the village, many were refurbished or repurposed. Some, such as the Smith and Dove mill buildings, would be demolished.
After the town farm lot was purchased by Wood in 1921, the Alms House was repurposed becoming a dormitory for unmarried female workers. Other buildings which were repurposed included the Village Hall which was moved to Balmoral Street and remodeled as a two-family home and the John Smith estate on North Main Street which became a hospital and then the Shawsheen Manor Hotel.
