In 1919 one of the largest construction projects Andover had seen began. It transformed Frye Village into a model community, Shawsheen Village, for the middle and upper management of the American Woolen Company who in 1923 moved their headquarters from Boston to a new Administration Building in the heart of the village.

In the period up to 1924, 200 homes were built together with a mill and community buildings.  The project was the brain child of William M Wood, company President, who, as early as 1906, had begun buying up land in the village. He envisioned a community where his managers could live, work and play, and all within walking distance.
